1006-043-"King Olav finishes with five ships" - Classic poster on semi-matte paper

Product description

Drawn by: Gerhard Munthe, 1899

About the illustration:

"In the winter of 1019, King Olav Haraldsson stayed in Nidaros. He heard that Christianity was weak in the north, especially in Hålogaland, where many still held on to old customs. The following spring, he prepared with five ships and nearly three hundred men to head north. Along the way through Naumdølafylke and further towards Hålogaland, he held assemblies in each district, where he was accepted as king and the Christian law was read aloud. The punishment for violations was severe, and both powerful and ordinary men had to submit. Many chieftains hosted the king with feasts, and the journey became a procession to strengthen both the king's power and the position of Christianity. Furthest north, Hårek of Tjøtta received the king with a magnificent feast. Hårek was rich, powerful, and of royal lineage, and had long managed the king's affairs in Finnmark. At this meeting, he was made a lendmann, and Olav gave him the same land revenues that previous chieftains had had. The illustration shows the king's men working on the beach to prepare the ships, with smoke from fires rising towards the sky.
