Snorre writes:

"The image shows the victors' ships returning home after the Battle of Svolder in the year 1000. After King Olav Tryggvason disappeared from Ormen Lange – whether he died or fled is uncertain – the cries of victory echoed. Sigvalde Jarl, who until then had stayed out of the fight, rowed towards the battlefield with his ten ships, while the snekke with his wife Astrid set course for Vendland. Rumors said that Olav had swum there and been rescued, but no one knew for sure. Eirik Jarl took Ormen Lange and a great war booty, and together with Svein the Danish king and Olav the Swede, he divided Norway. Eirik received large parts of Western Norway, Trøndelag, Hålogaland, and Agder, Svein the Danish king took Viken and gave Raumarike and Hedemarken as fiefs to Eirik, while Svein Håkonsson became jarl under Olav the Swede. Both jarls were baptized but ruled the country with respect for old laws and customs, and were known as friendly and skilled chieftains."
