"The year 994 King Svein held a great feast to claim the inheritance of his father Harald. Strut-Harald in Skåne and Vesete on Bornholm, fathers of the Jomsvikings' chiefs Sigvalde and Bue, had recently died. The king invited the Jomsvikings to the inheritance ale, and they came with 60 ships, filled with battle-hardened men. Before Svein took his seat at the high table, he drank his father's memorial cup and promised within three winters to drive King Adalråd out of England or kill him. Everyone had to drink, and the Jomsvikings received the largest horns and strongest drink. Sigvalde drank his father's memory and promised to go to Norway to kill or drive away Earl Håkon. His brother Torkel promised to follow him, Bue Digre promised never to flee from Håkon, Sigurd promised to fight until most Jomsvikings were defeated, and Vagn Åkesson promised to kill Torkel Leira and lie with his daughter. The next morning, sober, they realized the seriousness but decided to arm themselves immediately. The picture shows Earl Sigvalde standing in the middle of the hall, raising the drinking horn high while men around him do the same, caught in the moment's intoxication and solemnity."
