About the illustration:

"In the spring of 1021, Dale-Gudbrand, the most powerful chieftain in Gudbrandsdalen, heard that King Olav was forcing the villages to adopt Christianity. At the Hundorp farm, he gathered a large army and decided to send 800 armed men, led by his young son, to meet the king. The army marched towards Bredebygden, and along the way, they were joined by many who had fled from Olav's priests. The king, who had recently secured Lom and Vågå for the new faith, marched to meet them. At Bredebygden in Sel, the two forces met. Olav offered the farmers baptism but was met with mockery: “You have other things to think about today than making fun of us.” The battle broke out, and the king’s men threw their spears. The peasant force fled almost immediately, except for a few – among them Gudbrand’s son, who was taken prisoner. Olav spared his life and sent him back with a message that the king himself would soon come to Hundorp. The illustration shows the two forces close together, with shield walls, spears, and swords meeting in the first moments of battle."
