1005-001-"Domalde blotes" - Premium poster on semi-matte paper

Product description

Drawn by: Erik Werenskiold, 1899

About the illustration:

"Domalde, king of Uppsala, was according to Snorre known for a kingdom plagued by famine. First, the Swedes sacrificed oxen, but the crops failed. The next year they sacrificed men, but the hunger continued. When the third year of famine came, they gathered the assembly and consulted the volvas. The answer was that the king's life had to be given to the gods to gain fertility. The people then took Domalde and brought him to the temple in Uppsala. The illustration shows the moment he lies on the sacrificial table, surrounded by men in ceremonial robes, while spectators watch in the background. According to saga tradition, his blood was given to the fields to break the curse. After the sacrifice, good years followed, and the event stood as a dramatic example of how the king's fate was woven into the people's survival. Domalde's death became a mythical image of the ancient belief that the king was the link between gods and humans, and that his life could be demanded as a last resort.""}
