About the illustration:

"Halvdan Svarte, father of Harald Fairhair, was a powerful petty king who ruled over large parts of Eastern Norway. One winter he was a guest at Helga the Hair-prude's farm at Hermanrud, west of Randsfjorden. Helga, daughter of the chieftain Dag the Wise at Tingelstad, was known as a proud and powerful woman in Hadeland. When Halvdan continued with his retinue, he chose to take the route over the ice. The sun had thawed the surface, and at Røykenvik the livestock had been watered so that manure and warmth weakened the ice. When the king and his retinue passed, it broke. Horses and men plunged into the ice-cold water; some clung to the sleds, others were dragged down by panicked animals. Halvdan disappeared and drowned. When the body was brought to Ringerike, chieftains from Romerike, Vestfold, and Hedmark all wished to bury him in mounds to gain luck and good years. The solution was to divide the body into four: the head was buried in a mound at Stein in Ringerike, the rest distributed, and all the mounds were named Halvdanshauger. The picture shows the drama as the ice breaks – men and horses fight for their lives."
