Product description

Drawn by: Erik Werenskiold, 1899

About the illustration:

"Halfdan the Black, father of Harald Fairhair, was a powerful petty king who ruled over large parts of Eastern Norway. One winter, he was a guest at Helga the Hair-Prude's feast at the Hermanrud farm, west of Randsfjorden. Helga, daughter of chieftain Dag the Frode of Tingelstad, was known as a proud and powerful woman in Hadeland. When Halfdan continued on with his retinue, he chose to take the path over the ice. The sun had thawed the surface, and near Røykenvik, livestock had been watered so that manure and warmth weakened the ice. As the king and his retinue passed, it broke. Horses and men plunged into the ice-cold water—some clung to the sleds, others were dragged down by panicked animals. Halfdan disappeared and drowned. When the body was brought to Ringerike, nobles from Romerike, Vestfold, and Hedmark all wished to bury him in mounds to gain luck and good years. The solution was to divide the body into four: the head was buried in a mound at Stein in Ringerike, the rest distributed, and all the mounds were named Halvdanshauger. The picture shows the drama as the ice breaks—men and horses fight for their lives."
